Clay comes last, and only before polishing
Clay is mechanical: it shears off whatever chemistry couldn't dissolve. Even with plenty of lubricant it can leave light marring, so we only recommend claying when the paint will be polished afterwards. For a maintenance wash, alkaline, acid and iron steps do the job without touching the paint.

Clay bars
Classic bars, mild to heavy
Start with the mildest grade that does the job: heavier grades work faster but are more likely to mar. Knead to a fresh face often, and if a bar hits the ground, bin it.
Towels, discs & reusable clay
Faster on big panels
Synthetic clay on a towel, block or machine disc covers large areas quickly and can be rinsed clean instead of thrown away.
Clay lubricants
Slip is everything
The lubricant keeps the clay gliding instead of dragging. Keep the panel wet the whole time and re-spray before it starts to grab.
