DIY Detail HYDR8 Ceramic Coating: The Next-Generation TEOS Coating
HYDR8 is DIY Detail's newest ceramic coating — an 8-year rated, TEOS-based formula co-developed by Yvan Lacroix and the DIY Detail team. It delivers intense hydrophobics, deep gloss and a slick, easy-to-maintain finish, with an application window forgiving enough for first-time coaters yet performance that satisfies professionals.
The Chemistry — Why TEOS Matters
HYDR8 is built on TEOS (Tetraethyl Orthosilicate), a silica precursor that cross-links on the paint surface to form a dense SiO₂ network. According to DIY Detail, the TEOS formulation reduces applicator clogging during application and gives the cured film exceptional resistance to fracturing — one of the failure modes of conventional ceramic coatings. HYDR8 also supersedes the DIY Detail Metal Ceramic Coating, with slower carrier solvents and a longer flash time that improve performance on raw metal substrates.
KEY FEATURES & BENEFITS
- 8-Year Rated Durability: Long-term protection against UV, weathering and environmental contaminants.
- TEOS-Based Formula: Reduced clogging during application and enhanced fracture resistance in the cured film.
- Intense Hydrophobics: Water beads tightly and sheets off, keeping the car cleaner between washes.
- High Gloss & Slickness: Deep, wet-look finish with a genuinely slick touch.
- Forgiving Application: Apply to the whole vehicle, then return and level within 30 minutes.
- Multi-Surface: Suitable for paint, glass and raw metals — it replaces the Metal Ceramic Coating in the DIY Detail range.
- Pro Results, DIY Ease: Professional-grade durability with a user-friendly process.
DIRECTIONS
- Start with a clean, dry, properly corrected surface. Wipe down with DIY Detail Panel Prep.
- Wearing gloves, in a well-ventilated area, prime the applicator with 8–10 drops, then use 1–2 drops per panel.
- Apply in a circular motion, working panel by panel. You can coat the entire vehicle, then return and level within 30 minutes.
- Watch the surface: as the coating cross-links it turns to an "oil slick on water" appearance. When roughly 50% of the surface flashes back to clear, begin levelling.
- Level with a short-nap microfibre towel, then follow with a plush towel to remove any high spots. If the towel drags or wets out, wait another minute.
Cure Times
- Keep dry for 1 hour before any rain exposure.
- Wait 3 days before the first wash — a pH-neutral rinseless wash is ideal.
Apply in a well-ventilated area, wear gloves, and use a mask if needed.
