HYDR8 is DIY Detail's current 8-year ceramic coating — the revised, TEOS-based formula now sold in place of their earlier 8 Year Ceramic Coating. It sits at the top of the DIY Detail coating range (1 Year → 3 Year Graphene → Type 3 5 Year → HYDR8). Checked against DIY Detail's own catalogue and their Australian distributor, August 2026.

Seen a different description elsewhere? Some overseas retailers still run the old "polysiloxane, SiN, SiC" wording on this listing. That is outdated copy on the renamed product — DIY Detail's own page for HYDR8 states the TEOS formulation.

Two DIY Detail coatings people sometimes confuse with it are separate products, not older versions: the Type 3 5 Year Ceramic Coating (a shorter-life paint coating, still current) and the Metal Ceramic Coating (for raw metal and wheels).

DIY Detail HYDR8 Ceramic Coating — the revised 8-year TEOS formula

HYDR8 is DIY Detail's current-generation paint and glass coating, and the direct replacement for their earlier 8 Year Ceramic Coating. It is built to deliver intense hydrophobics, deep gloss and a genuinely slick finish, with an application window forgiving enough for a first-time coater and durability rated by the manufacturer at up to 8 years.

What's in the box: 30ml bottle + foam applicator.

The chemistry — why TEOS matters

HYDR8 is a TEOS-based coating. TEOS (tetraethyl orthosilicate) is a silica precursor: it hydrolyses and condenses on the paint surface to build a dense SiO₂ network rather than curing as a simple resin film. DIY Detail's stated reasons for using it are twofold — the formulation resists clogging in the applicator during application, and the cured film has improved resistance to fracturing, which is one of the ways a conventional coating fails early.

The revision also runs slower carrier solvents and a longer flash time than the coating it replaces, which is what gives you the wider levelling window. All durability and performance figures here are the manufacturer's own ratings, not independently measured — real-world life depends on prep, application and how the car is washed.

Key features & benefits

  • Latest revision: the current formula, sold in place of the previous DIY Detail 8 Year Ceramic Coating.
  • 8-year rated durability: long-term protection against UV, weathering and environmental contaminants.
  • Revised TEOS formula: reduced clogging during application, improved fracture resistance in the cured film.
  • Intense hydrophobics: water beads tightly and sheets off, so the car stays cleaner between washes.
  • Repels water spots and contaminants: bird droppings, tree sap and industrial fallout sit on top of the coating rather than attacking the clear coat.
  • High gloss and slickness: deep, wet-look finish with real slip under the hand.
  • Forgiving application window: coat the whole vehicle, then come back and level within 30 minutes.
  • Excellent glass performance: extends the same protection to windscreen and side glass.
  • Pro results, DIY ease: professional-grade durability with a process an enthusiast can run at home.
  • Pairs with paint correction: a coating locks in whatever is underneath it — correct first, then coat.

How to apply HYDR8

  1. Start with a clean, dry, properly decontaminated and corrected surface.
  2. Wipe down with DIY Detail Panel Prep, or apply C6 APP as an adhesion promoter.
  3. Wearing gloves, in a well-ventilated area, prime the applicator pad with 8–10 drops. Then use 1–2 drops per panel.
  4. Working in a circular motion, apply to a small area at a time (a front fender, for example).
  5. You can apply HYDR8 to the whole vehicle, then return and level within 30 minutes of application.
  6. Watch the surface. As the coating cross-links it transitions from a liquid to what looks like an oil slick on water.
  7. When about 50% of the surface has turned back to clear, start levelling.
  8. With a short-nap towel, wipe lightly. If the towel drags or is getting wet, wait another minute.
  9. Level with an Edgeless Pearl microfibre towel, then follow behind with an Eagle Edgeless 600 microfibre towel.

Cure times

  • Keep dry for 1 hour before any exposure to rain.
  • Wait 3 days before the first wash — DIY Detail Rinse Less Wash is the intended maintenance product.

Apply in a well-ventilated area. Wear gloves, and a mask if needed.

Wheels, calipers or raw metal? That is a different job and a different product — use the Metal Ceramic Coating, formulated for raw, uncoated metals such as aluminium, chrome, copper, stainless and alloys.
