The rectangular shape is the point of it — it sits flat and stable, takes up less bench and boot space than a round bucket, and you can stand bottles and brushes inside it for transport.

On the two-bucket method
One bucket holds your shampoo, the second holds plain rinse water. The mitt goes into the rinse bucket and gets agitated before it goes back into the shampoo, so the grit you just pulled off the paint stays out of the wash solution. A grit guard in the base of the rinse bucket traps that grit and stops it swirling back up. It is the single cheapest change most people can make to reduce wash marring — and it matters far more than which shampoo is in the bucket.
