What bonded iron actually is

Every time a brake pad meets a disc it throws off hot ferrous particles. They land on paint, glass and wheels still hot enough to embed, and once they are in they oxidise from the inside out. This is the contamination you feel rather than see — paint that looks clean but feels gritty through a plastic bag, wheels that go on showing dark speckles after washing, glass that stays faintly rough no matter how you clean it. A wash will not shift it. Nothing alkaline will shift it. It has to be chemically dissolved.

Acid-free, and what “pH neutral” really means here

Maniac Line's Iron Remover is acid-free and pH balanced — Mafra do not publish a numerical pH, and we would rather tell you that than invent one. What is worth understanding is that an iron remover reads neutral in the bottle and does not stay that way on the panel. Chelating dissolved iron releases hydrogen ions, so the film sitting on your paint turns mildly acidic as it works. That is the chemistry doing its job, not a fault — but it is exactly why you rinse thoroughly and never let it dry.

How to use it

Ready to use, or diluted to a maximum of 1:1 — that is Mafra's own ceiling, and going weaker than that just means it works more slowly. Spray onto a cool surface out of direct sun. Mafra state 3 to 4 minutes on rims and 3 to 5 minutes on bodywork. Rinse hard before it dries.

Approved for steel, aluminium, light alloy, painted, chromed and polished rims, bodywork and glass. Mafra specifically exclude unpainted or unprotected metal, and they do not recommend it on motorcycles — worth knowing before you reach for it in a bike shed.

Doing wheels? Your discs will flash-rust afterwards

Bare cast iron that has just been rinsed with an iron remover will bloom orange within minutes, and that dust lands on the wheels you have just cleaned. Spray Hyde's Serum Rustopper on the wet rotor to stop it.
