Bilt Hamber Deox-Gel | Thixotropic Rust Remover
For everything too big to dunk
Deox-C works beautifully — as long as the part fits in a bucket. Deox-Gel is the answer for the chassis rail, the inner arch, the panel still bolted to the car. It is a highly thixotropic gel, which is Bilt Hamber's own word for it: it shears thin under the brush so it spreads, then recovers its structure the instant you stop, so it clings to vertical steel instead of running down it and pooling on your driveway.
The chemistry
Bilt Hamber describe Deox-Gel as carrying viscosity builders and preservatives alongside the active agents, which they state are harmless, non-toxic and biodegradable. The SDS puts it at pH 4.0 ± 0.5 — mildly acidic — with no CLP hazard classification and no hazardous ingredients declared.
Bilt Hamber don't publish the active, and we won't invent one for you. What we can tell you is that the pH sits within half a point of Deox-C's, and the hazard and biodegradability profiles are identical — draw your own conclusions, but we're not going to state as fact something the manufacturer has never confirmed.
How to use it
Prep matters more than you think. Wire-brush or abrade the loose rust away, degrease with white spirit, wash with hot soapy water and wipe dry. Gel on contaminated steel is wasted gel.
Apply thick. A thick, even coat up to 4mm, by brush, trowel or spatula. It won't pour and it won't drip — shake it out of an inverted pot.
Give it time, and don't let it dry. 30 minutes to 2 hours for light corrosion. For medium to heavy, 12 to 48 hours, covered with cling film to stop it drying out. That film is not optional on a long dwell.
Agitate, then scrub it off with plenty of water. This is the step people skip. The surface can still look rusty until you physically scrub the lifted oxides free — the gel has done its job, the residue just hasn't left yet. Two applications will handle even heavy corrosion.
Then protect it immediately
Freshly de-rusted steel is bare steel. Dry it, hit it with Atom-Mac to stop flash rust, and get a coating on it before the atmosphere does the job for you.
