The problem with most wheel cleaners

Acid wheel cleaners work because they attack. So do caustic ones — just from the other end of the scale. Both will clean a wheel, and both will, over enough cycles, etch the lacquer, dull the machined face and creep into the pores of a diamond-cut rim. Bilt Hamber's argument is that you don't need either, and their SDS backs it up.

The chemistry

Auto-Wheel runs on sodium mercaptoacetate (sodium thioglycolate) at 10–30%, CAS 367-51-1 — the same thiol active as Korrosol, paired with a C12-14 ether sulfate surfactant for degreasing. Bilt Hamber's safety data sheet places it at pH 5.5–7.0. That is the entire point: it is neither acid nor alkali, and it still outperforms products that are.

It works by chelation. The thiol coordinates bonded iron — brake dust, rail dust, ferrous fallout — and renders it water-soluble, so it rinses off instead of remaining welded to your finish. The clear-to-purple bleed you see is the chelation running. It is a progress bar, not a gimmick.

Korrosol or Auto-Wheel?

Same active, different rheology. Bilt Hamber formulate Korrosol to spread across paint, and Auto-Wheel to cling to the dirtier, vertical, awkward surfaces of a wheel. Use each for the job it was built for.

How to use it

Cool wheels only. Test the rear face of a wheel first. Spray liberally over the whole wheel, covering the edges and barrel. Give it 1–5 minutes — temperature dependent — and watch for the colour change. When the purple stops deepening, agitate very dirty wheels with a soft brush, then pressure wash off. Ready to use, no dilution.

Keep it away from chrome-look plastic centres and chrome films. The conductive film can be chelated and dulled.

Handle it properly

The thiol active is a skin sensitiser. Bilt Hamber classify Auto-Wheel H317, H302 and H319. Nitrile gloves, eye protection, don't breathe the mist. Non-acid does not mean inert.

Is Auto-Wheel acid-free?
