Custom-cut PPF in Melbourne. Chemistry-led prep that keeps the film down for the life of the warranty.
Paint protection film is one of the most expensive things you'll ever put on your car — and one of the most commonly installed badly. At Alpha Details in Heidelberg West, we install PPF the way it's meant to be installed: custom-cut to your car, edges tucked, laid over paint that's been prepped the same way we prep for a ceramic coating.
We're a small Melbourne PPF studio working on a deliberately limited number of cars per week. If you're looking for the cheapest front bumper in the city, we're not that shop. If you're looking for a PPF installer who'll explain why every step matters and quote you an honest number before touching the car — keep reading.
Why our PPF installs in Melbourne outlast the rest
The adhesive on the back of any paint protection film doesn't bond to paint. It bonds to whatever's sitting on top of the paint. Residual polymer from a previous wax, silicone fallout from road spray, ionic contamination from brake dust baked into the clearcoat — if any of that is still there when the film goes down, the adhesive attaches to the contamination rather than to your paint. That's how you end up with a film that looks perfect on day one and starts lifting at the edges eighteen months later.
Most installers treat the paint surface as something to clean. We treat it as a chemical substrate.
01
Iron & tar decon
Iron fallout removal and tar removal to strip ionic and bonded contaminants from the clearcoat.
02
Clay or synthetic clay pass
Removes embedded debris that decontamination chemistry can't lift on its own.
03
IPA / panel-prep wipe
Strips residual oils, polishing residue and silicone so the adhesive bonds to bare clearcoat.
04
Inspection under proper lighting
High-intensity inspection lighting catches anything missed before the film goes anywhere near the panel.
Worth knowing →
It takes longer than a standard prep. It's the reason our installs stay down for the full warranty period rather than lifting at eighteen months.
Custom-cut to your car — not plotter-cut
Most PPF shops in Melbourne install film using pre-cut plotter patterns. A computer cuts the film to a digital template of your car, the installer peels it, lays it, and moves to the next job. It's fast and consistent, which is how a shop maximises cars through the door per week.
Plotter-cut (most shops)
Pre-cut to a generic digital template. Seams running down panels. Pattern cuts that stop short of real body lines. Edges that aren't wrapped because plotter patterns are designed to stop before an edge rather than tuck around it. Fast. Visible.
Custom-cut to your car (our way)
Slower work, more skill required. Film wraps edges instead of stopping short of them. Seams tucked under body lines so they disappear. Panel-specific adjustments a plotter pattern can't make — previous paint repairs that made one panel slightly thicker, or edge radii tighter than the manufacturer's digital model.
Custom-cut · Edges tucked · No template seams
Every panel custom-cut to your car and laid by our team at our Heidelberg West studio.
Squeegee work, slip solution, controlled environment to keep dust contamination out of the bond line. Custom-fitted to your specific vehicle so the result is seamless: edges tucked into shut lines, no template seams running across a panel, no exposed paint along the leading edge of a bumper.
The paint protection films we install
We carry three films by default. Each one is formulated differently and each has a clear strength. None of them is objectively the best — they trade one strength for another, and the right choice depends on how you use the car.
Hydrophobic · Long-term gloss
Suntek Ultra
Self-healing TPU film by Eastman Chemical Company. Strong UV resistance for Australian conditions and a topcoat that self-heals reliably with ambient warmth. 10-year manufacturer warranty against cracking, bubbling and yellowing.
Best for: owners who want a wet-look finish that holds gloss for years.
Ceramic-infused · Chemical resistance
STEK DYNOshield
8-mil TPU film with a hydrophobic ceramic-infused topcoat baked in — sheds water and contaminants without needing a separate ceramic on top. Bird droppings, tree sap, road tar and industrial fallout etch less aggressively. 10-year warranty.
Best for: daily-driven cars exposed to real-world contamination.
Optical clarity · Unobtrusive finish
CarPro Immortal
CarPro's flagship TPU film with self-healing topcoat, strong hydrophobic performance and excellent clarity. Designed to disappear visually so the original paint takes centre stage.
Best for: when aesthetics matter more than any specific performance claim.
Have a brand preference? If you specifically want XPEL, 3M or any other reputable film, we'll source it from an authorised supplier. What we won't do is install an unverified film from a grey-market supplier, and we won't tell you one film is better than another when what we actually mean is that it has the biggest margin for us.
Our PPF packages and starting prices
Every package is quoted individually based on your car, the film you choose, and any extras you bundle. These are genuine starting prices, not loss leaders.
Partial Front
From $2,500
Front bumper, partial bonnet, partial front fenders, headlights, mirror caps. The minimum meaningful protection for a daily driver.
Full Front · Most Popular
From $3,500
Full bumper, full bonnet, full front fenders, headlights, mirror caps. The most popular package for owners who drive the car regularly and want complete front-end protection.
Track Pack
From $4,000
Full front plus rocker panels and rear-wheel-arch leading edges. Built for cars that see track days or spirited road use where stone chip damage extends beyond the front end.
Full Body Wrap
From $12,000
Every exterior panel, edges wrapped, seams tucked. Indicated for exotics, limited-production cars, and any vehicle where resale value or original paint preservation justifies the investment.
Price variation depends on the film brand, panel complexity, any respray detection that requires additional prep, and optional extras. We quote you an honest number before you commit to anything. No sales-floor pressure, no "today only" discounts, no mystery surcharges once the car is already pulled apart.
Everything under one roof
Most PPF shops do one thing well and send you elsewhere for the rest. We don't. Add ceramic coating on top of the film, wheel face and barrel coating, leather and fabric interior protection, glass coating, undercarriage coating — all on the same booking, prepped once, installed by the same team.
Ceramic on top of PPF
Hydrophobic chemical layer over the film for easier maintenance and added gloss.
Wheel coating
High-temperature ceramic on barrels and faces — brake-dust release becomes effortless.
Glass coating
Hydrophobic windscreen coating — cleaner vision in rain, less wiper drag.
Interior protection
Fabric, leather and Alcantara coatings against spills, sunscreen and wear.
Undercarriage coating
Corrosion protection for cars that see coastal driving, country roads, or salted surfaces.
Track sacrificial layer
Additional sacrificial PPF over the standard install on leading edges — cheaply replaceable between events.
Your first wash is included →
Most shops hand you the car back with a list of rules and leave you to figure it out. We include your first wash with every install and walk you through it in person. The first wash is where customers make the mistakes that cost them film life — wrong shampoo, wrong technique, wrong drying method. We do it with you.

Train with Alpha Details
We accredit and train detailers and dealerships in the full Labocosmetica and Feynlab professional ranges from our Heidelberg West studio. Hands-on application training with the same chemistry we use on customer cars every day.
Where we are and the Melbourne suburbs we serve
Alpha Details operates from Unit 19, 99 Northern Road, Heidelberg West VIC 3081. We work with customers across Melbourne — from the eastern suburbs through Kew, Hawthorn and Richmond, north through Ivanhoe and Reservoir, east to Doncaster, Templestowe and Bulleen, and as far out as Eltham and Greensborough. We regularly get enquiries from further afield when an owner specifically wants chemistry-led prep behind their install.
If you're driving in from outside the metro area, we can arrange overnight secure storage as part of the booking — useful if your car needs a full-body install that runs across multiple days.
Frequently asked questions
How long does paint protection film last?
Reputable films carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking and delamination. Real-world life depends on the climate, washing technique, and — most importantly — how well the paint was prepped before the film went on.
Is PPF better than a ceramic coating?
They do different jobs. PPF is a physical barrier that absorbs stone chips. Ceramic coating is a chemical barrier that improves hydrophobicity and ease of cleaning. Many of our customers have both — PPF on the high-impact panels, ceramic over the top.
Do you install XPEL or 3M?
Yes, on request. We install Suntek, STEK and CarPro Immortal by default because we have worked extensively with all three, but we'll source any reputable brand from an authorised supplier.
How long does the install take?
Partial Front typically a day. Full Front one to two days depending on panel complexity. Full Body wrap runs three to five days. We quote you the exact timeline when we quote the price.
Can I wash the car straight after install?
We handle the first wash for you as part of every install. After that, wait the film's stated curing period before handling the edges or pressure-washing around them — we walk you through the exact window for the film you chose.
Do you work on exotics and classics?
Yes. The Porsches, Mercedes-AMGs, Ferraris and restoration-grade classics we have wrapped are photographed on our Instagram. Classics in particular benefit from PPF because the paint systems used on older cars are softer and more chip-prone than modern clearcoats.

Tell us what you drive, how you use it, and what you want protected. We'll talk you through which film and package actually suits — not which one is the most profitable for us. This is where the chemistry degree earns its keep.

The adhesive bond line is where every PPF install lives or dies. Chemistry-led prep is the difference between a ten-year install and a two-year one.
